Chapter Twenty-Five

Stella steered her car slowly along the rutted lane away from Henry’s cottage, trying to avoid the deep potholes she could see in her car headlights. At the end of the drive, she turned onto the tarmac road, drove a short distance and then pulled over into a lay-by. She turned off the engine and threw open the car door, breathing in huge gasps of the cold night air. With movements jerky with panic Stella swung her legs out of the car and sat, with her head in her hands letting the cold air seep into her consciousness, bringing her back to reality. She couldn’t, wouldn’t fall for Henry.

A while later Stella raised her head, far below the lay-by, through the trees, highlighted in the pale glow of the full moon was the gorgeous mansion. It stood, a proud, dark solid shape surrounded by the pale silvery sheen of the surrounding fields and gardens. The round face of the moon was reflected in the lake close to the house. And beyond the house, off to the right, were the sagging roof tops of Henry’s cottage and the bulk of the barn behind it. Stella levered herself to her feet and leant against her car bonnet, gazing longingly at the mansion. That was the sort of place that she wanted to live in. Not some tumbledown cottage like the one Henry lived in. She ran a trembling hand over her forehead, feeling the tension in her skin, her temples throbbed. She had to get a grip on herself; she could not let herself fall for Henry.

She pictured a nightmare scenario, living in the battered cottage, becoming a bitter drudge, shabby and careworn like her mother. Stella shook her head to clear the scene from her thoughts. That could not happen.

Stella shivered. It was impossible for her to fall for someone like Henry. A relationship between them would never work. She got back into her car, turned on the engine and pulled out onto the road again, she glimpsed the mansion in her rear-view mirror as it slid away out of the line of her vision.

She could not let herself get fond of Henry. That would lead to certain disaster. Stella brought her hand to her cheek; she could still feel the touch of his fingers against her skin from when he had gently pulled her towards him and brought his lips tenderly down onto hers. At that moment the world had spun dizzily on its axis, as if she would fall, but his arms had encircled her, holding like he had the strength to support the two of them. He had kissed her so gently, his lips moving against hers as if she were the most precious thing he had ever touched. She had felt the warmth from his body; the strength within him as his body gently brushed against hers. And when they had drawn apart, they had stood for a long moment, both surprised and afraid of what was happening between them.
